Key Background
The Washington Commanders are pulling off a master move signing veteran edge pass rusher and linebacker Von Miller to a one-year deal. At 36 years young, Miller is one of the most recognizable and successful defensive players in the league to add to his CV eight Pro Bowls, three First-Team All-Pro selections, and two Super Bowl titles. His arrival will provide an instant boost of experience and depth to a defense that had moments of promise but lacked late-game polish in 2024.
Miller caps an up-from-the-downs campaign with the Buffalo Bills with six sacks after a 2023 sack-less season, one which he recovered on the shelf from injury. His Buffalo dismissal this season was as much salary cap as performance, and the future Hall of Famer ended up on the open market. The Commanders pointed out that there was the possibility of bringing some punch to the pass rush with a high-risk, low-reward signing.
The business partnership between Miller and Commanders General Manager Adam Peters professionally was included in this deal. Peters had worked in the Denver Broncos front office when the Broncos drafted Miller with their second overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. That business partnership combined with the Washington desperate need for veteran pass rush support made the pair a natural fit. The Commanders didn’t pick the edge position in the 2025 NFL Draft and required established asset after Dante Fowler Jr. departed.
As training camp looms on July 22, Miller will battle for rotational snaps and serve as an elder statesman to some of the younger players. The Commanders believe his playoff experience and game-changer ability can help flip the script for a defense that couldn’t close out tight games last season. Healthy, Miller could be a part of Washington’s return to playoff contention for the 2025 season.
