Apple Launches New MacBook Air Models with $100 Price Cut Amid Tariffs

Apple recently unveiled its latest MacBook Air models, featuring significant upgrades, including a faster M4 chip and an enhanced videoconferencing camera. Despite the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Chinese imports, which took effect on March 1, Apple has reduced the U.S. price of the MacBook Air by $100. The new pricing, with the 13-inch model starting at $999 and the 15-inch variant at $1,099, signals the company’s strategy to maintain competitive pricing in a challenging economic environment. 

The refreshed MacBook Air retains the same design as previous iterations, but it now comes in a new sky-blue color option and supports up to three external monitors. Customers can also opt for additional memory and storage upgrades, offering greater customization.  

This product launch is particularly important for Apple, as the MacBook Air is one of its most popular and critical offerings. In the December quarter, Mac sales increased by 15%, primarily driven by strong laptop sales, despite a broader decline in overall Mac sales due to the post-pandemic normalization. Apple’s move to cut the price of the MacBook Air stands in contrast to some of its competitors, such as Acer, which have already raised prices in response to the tariffs. 

In addition to the MacBook Air announcement, Apple introduced a high-end Mac Studio desktop designed for AI, graphics, and video production, starting at $1,999. The company also upgraded its iPad Air with the M4 chip and introduced the iPhone 16e, replacing last year’s budget model. The price adjustments and product launch from Apple come at a time of heightened scrutiny regarding how tech companies will respond to rising tariff costs. While competitors have already begun passing these increased costs onto consumers, Apple’s decision to hold prices steady, at least for now, indicates its strategic focus on maintaining affordability amidst economic pressures.
